  • Recruitment Scholars

Recruitment scholars are individuals who are not working by a SMART Sponsoring Facility (SF) in permanent civilian employment at the time of the award. Recruitment scholars are those who are hired by the Sponsoring Facility in temporary or internship roles at the time of the award.

Summer internships and a period of post-graduation employment at their allocated DoD Sponsoring Facility are required for recruitment scholars.

  • Retention Scholars

Retention scholars are those who are employed by the Sponsoring Facility (SF) in a permanent or renewable term civilian post at the time of the award. Retention jobs can be full-time permanent or full-time temporary. This should be noted in the Professional Experiences section of the SMART application.

During the summer months, retention scholars work with their DoD Sponsoring Facilities to arrange a return-to-work schedule. They must return to their DoD Sponsoring Facility to finish their military commitment time after graduation.

As part of the DoD Science and Technology (S&T) workforce, the DoD aids current federal personnel in furthering their studies and continuing their careers. Present DoD workers will, mostly, remain employed by their current organization as retention scholars if chosen by their current employer. Such applicants will be required to submit their current employer’s contact information and a letter from their supervisor stating that he or she knows the applicant is applying for money under the SMART Program.

Scholars will get a copy of the SMART Scholar Handbook after being accepted into the program. These terms and conditions apply to scholars who have been given a scholarship and have accepted it.

Every year, the SMART application is open from August through December, with rewards given out the following spring.
